Friends

By Elizabeth Tang Grade 6

I once heard a sentence about friendship: “Friendship is the condiment of life, as well as the painkiller of life.” I was deeply touched by these words.

I have a confidant who cares about me and brings me happiness every time, even though we are so different.

We didn’t become friends at first sight. At first, I thought she was just a quirky girl (which was very impolite of me). On one occasion, the teacher let us help her check the homework. This was a very serious task for me, but for her, it was a very good chance to exert her “imagination”.

While I was frowning and tracking every mistake on the worksheet with my pencil, she suddenly leaped around my desk like a monkey.” Nicholas Wilde, you are under arrest!” and “You are disturbing me! Can you stop doing your weird dance?” I snapped, though a smile was already creeping up my face.

No matter what I said, she did not give up disturbing me. But I didn’t feel very angry. Instead, I thought I found pleasure in watching her silly dancing.

The teacher told us, “Don’t play with the kids who always do stupid things,” but I think an introverted person really needs an extroverted person to accompany them.

I think my friend has changed something inside me. She sparked a quiet revolution inside me, rewriting my definition of life. For a long time, I wore the heavy armor of being “decent” and “tractable”—the perfect student my teacher loved. But with her, I finally stepped out of that mold. She gave me the courage to embrace my own “silly” side. I stopped viewing the world through the critical eyes of others. She didn’t just bring me joy; she brought me freedom. I have learned to identify good suggestions, but I am free now.

Adults always want to trim us like a potted plant, but we are the big tree that grows unrestrained.

Maybe I won’t have any time to go crazy when I grow up. So, that is why I met her, my best friend.

Nowadays, perhaps she is the only person who understands me. My parents have a lot of work, so they don’t have time to listen to me. I always feel upset when I notice that nobody listens to me. And of course, some too many adults don’t get our kids’ thoughts, but my friends can! We have so many of the same opinions that we can get along very easily.

Humans are creatures that need a sense of belonging and social activities; we need another person to pay attention to us. However, in this fast-paced era, family can’t give us all of these.

So you came into my life, my friend. Thanks!
