Are Referees Being Mistreated?

By: Elle Shi, Grade 7

Referees are part of nearly every sport, yet they are often treated like they aren’t a part of them. Players and coaches have always relied on officials to keep games fair and organized, but the way referees are treated during games raises an important question: are referees being mistreated?

One reason for this behavior is the pressure to win. In high-stakes games, emotions run high, and every decision feels critical. When a call doesn’t go someone’s way, it’s easy to blame the one who makes the call. However, this ignores the important fact that referees are also human. They make decisions in real time, often in fast-paced situations and therefore mistakes can happen, just like players miss shots or make errors.

Another issue is that referees are rarely given the same respect as athletes. Players train physically and mentally for their sport. Referees also go through training to understand rules. Without them, games simply couldn’t happen. Yet instead of being seen as essential, they are often treated as obstacles or targets for frustration.

The mistreatment of referees can also have long-term effects. Many young or new officials quit because of constant criticism. This leads to a shortage of referees, which can cause games to be canceled or in an even worse situation, played with less experienced officials. That doesn’t mean referees should never be questioned. Accountability is important, and respectful communication can help improve the game. However, there’s a clear difference between constructive feedback and outright disrespect. Yelling, insults, and aggressive behavior don’t fix bad, or correct, calls.

Sports are meant to teach teamwork, discipline, and respect. That respect shouldn’t stop at teammates and opponents, but continuing to the referees as well. If players and fans want fairness in the game, they need to treat the people enforcing the rules with fairness too.
