How to Get Out of a Training Slump

By: Elle Shi, Grade 8

Every athlete knows the feeling when you show up to practice, go through the motions, and leave feeling like you’ve accomplished absolutely nothing. Skills that once came naturally suddenly feel impossible, progress seems nonexistent, and motivation slowly begins to disappear. Welcome to what every athlete dreads, the training slump.

The first step to getting out of one is understanding that progress isn’t always linear. Athletes often become so focused on improving that they forget improvement takes time. Having a few bad practices doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly become a worse athlete. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a step back and recognize how far you’ve already come.

Another important step is changing your routine. Repeating the same exercises and expecting different results can become exhausting. Setting smaller, achievable goals can make training feel rewarding again. Instead of focusing on winning every match or mastering an entire skill, concentrate on improving one small detail at a time.

Most importantly, remember why you started. Whether it’s the excitement of competition, the satisfaction of mastering a difficult skill, or simply the love of the sport, reconnecting with that original motivation can make a difference.

A training slump isn’t the end of an athlete’s progress. In fact, it can be one of the most valuable parts of their journey. After all, becoming a better athlete isn’t about never falling behind; it’s about learning how to move forward when you do.
