Awakening of Insects (Jingzhe) – A Spring Awakening

By: Sherry – Grade 8

Jingzhe, or “Awakening of Insects,” is the third solar term in spring. It usually falls around March 5th or 6th each year. As the weather gets warmer, spring thunder begins to rumble. According to ancient Chinese belief, this thunder wakes up the sleeping insects underground. Hence the name “Awakening of Insects.”

During this time, farmers start their busy work. They believe Jingzhe is an important time to protect crops from pests. People also have special customs. For example, they eat pears, because the sweet and juicy fruit is good for the lungs in dry spring weather. Some families also draw a white tiger to drive away bad luck.

Jingzhe reminds us that nature is full of energy. Animals and plants come back to life. It is a fresh start after a quiet winter.
