Every four years, around 1.5 billion people around the world tune in to watch the FIFA World Cup. The tournament brings together the best soccer teams on the planet and creates unforgettable moments of excitement, teamwork, and national pride.

However, how did this global event even start?

The story of the FIFA World Cup starts in the early 1900s. At the time, soccer was already popular in many countries, but there was no worldwide tournament dedicated solely to the sport. In 1904, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) was founded to oversee international soccer competitions. As the sport continued to grow, it is the most popular sport after all, FIFA leaders dreamed of creating a tournament where nations could compete for a world championship.

That dream became a reality in 1930 when the first FIFA World Cup was held in Uruguay. Only 13 teams participated, and travel was difficult because many teams had to cross the Atlantic Ocean by ship. Despite these challenges, the tournament was a success. In that tournament, Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in the final and became the first World Cup champion.

The World Cup quickly gained popularity, but it faced obstacles along the way. The tournaments scheduled for 1942 and 1946 were canceled because of World War II. After the war, the competition returned in 1950 and continued to grow in size and popularity. More nations joined and television broadcasts allowed fans from around the world to watch the matches.

Today, the FIFA World Cup is the most-watched sporting event in the world. What began as a small tournament with 13 teams has grown into a worldwide celebration of soccer with 48 teams, most recently. The World Cup has united people of all different countries and backgrounds to watch, or play, a simple game. By understanding the FIFA World Cup’s background, people can continue to honor this sport and connect all different nations.
